Milan, Arsenal, or something inbetween

A fast look on milan squad make you realize they have 18 players over 30 years old (well some are getting really old), while another look on Arsenal team you will notice that 17 players were born after 1985, 15 out of 17 were born after 1987! (and most of them are the key members of the squad)

Thats an interesting case study...where will you put your money? experienced squad with lot of maturity...and age? Or talented hungry squad, yet "lack authority" the way wenger put it after Fulham defeat?

Major clubs analysis - Part 2: ARSENAL

Time: Same time one year ago.
New premiership season, everyone excited about it! But what about Arsenal? All the talk was about the "green gunners" and if they will have the chance to be forth, too young, too inexperienced, and most importantly, without Henry.
Football is not a pure math; gunners had a banging start, being the team to beat through out the season, only allowing the titles to slip in the last 100 meters of the season.

Time: now
New premiership season, everyone excited about it! But what about Arsenal? All the talk was about the "green gunners" and if they will have the chance to be forth, too young, too inexperienced, and most importantly, without Flamini and Hleb.

How will it go for the idealist Wenger? Will he prove everyone wrong again? And the most important question, are the fans welling to accept a competitive team that can only compete but get no titles?

The starting square is to browse the squad to guess if they have what it need to make the fans satisfied, because it seems like arsenal fans are running out of patience, so it may turn to be a make or break for Arsenal and for Arsene.

Goalkeepers:

Manuel Almunia
Lukasz Fabianski

Manuel may not be that sparking, but he is the man. He already proved that the team can feel secured having him to guard the posts, Lukasz is young but certainly with lot of potentials, enough talent to keep the Spaniard alerted, Gunners have no complains between the posts.

Defense:

Bakary Sagna, Gallas, Kolo Toure, Gael Clichy is a first class defense, in a good day. Both Sagna and Clichy proved being great assets for the team, both defensively and offensively. Kolo and Galas are solid in the back, yet they need to enhance there concentration to avoid the silly mistakes they do from time to time, mainly Galas.

As for backups, purchasing Silvestre, regardless of all the criticism that I read, was a smart acquisition. or else will you name another player you can get for 750000 who can offer the added value this guy can install in arsenal defense? I thought arsenal need experienced players, or isn’t that what everybody claim? A great back up both for CB and LB, aside of being a player who can help the green lads to mature.
Talking about back ups it is supposed for Justin Hotye and Armand Traore to add depth on the flanks and for Alexander Song to have his saying as a promising CB. Keeping in mind that Eboue can be used in his natural position – RB- anytime needed.
Based on that, I can say that Arsenal Defense has enough quality to feel secured. On the premiership standards I would give it a 7.5/10 mark.

Midfield:

There is no doubt the emigration of Flamini and Hleb was not a good news for the gunners, Flamini was the horse of the house last season, while Hleb aside of his lack of scoring instinct formed a great partnership with Cesc and showered Adebayor with killer assists each and every game.

The payers bought for midfield are Aaron Ramsey and Samir Nasri, I believe Nasri can by time make the fans forget about Hleb, and because of the wild competition between man Utd and arsenal to get Ramsey, That may give an impression how talented this lad can be. But the real concern for arsenal fans, and its reasonable, who will handle Flamini role in the field? Abou Diaby? Aaron Ramsey? I believe wenger know that solving this issue can prove being the make or break for the team performance this season,.
In my opinion, and with all my support to Arsen philosophy leaning on young talents, there are certain positions where u NEED experience, mostly in CB and DM/CM, you need a leader, a solid nail to base your tactical structure on, non of the available players can actually perform that role, and this is where arsenal obviously have a weakness!

Moving to the more exiting roles, they certainly have one of the most gifted midfielders in Cesc, his leadership skills always impressed me, even though he is not so flammable recently, but he is always up to the challenge, he is a player Arsenal can depend on, but arsenal must not get dependent on him, that will be like playing with the devil.
On the flanks, they have really good players but non of them without a "but"…meaning, Theo Walcott is one of the most skillful talents in England, but his ups and downs spread a shadow of uncertainty leading Arsen to make the painful guess" select him…select him not". Tomas Rosicky when in form, can carry the team to the peak, but he is in form when he is not injured, which is not that often, same with Emmanuel Eboue, even though he was more inspiring when he played as a RB, but having Sagna there, give him no chance. Denilson can offer a good solution for the team and enrich the picking basket available for wenger.

In brief, and honestly, without signing an accomplished DM, I see arsenal struggling to cover that gap, but getting the right guy there, and being lucky enough not to face too many injuries, their midfield have what it need to insure the job done.

Forwards:

Robin Van Persie, Emmanuel Adebayor, Nicklas Bendtner, Carlos Vela, Eduardo
Believe it r not, this team has the most exciting array of forwards when all in form. Combining strength of "big guys like Ade and Bendtner with the skillful talent and creativity of Robin Van Persie and Eduardo, adding the new prospect Carlos Vela, when everyone is fine then wenger can smile with confidence, but recently he barely smile!
Certainly he wish not to have the same troubles with RVP injuries, certainly he hope Eduardo bounce back to his form before that bad injury, and of course counting on his determination to keep Adebayor. If so, then Arsenal can be sure they have the "it" to compete and snap titles.

Finally Arsen know that the fans excitement in the youth project started to cool down since they noticed its not helping the club to earn titles, he know that if this season ended dry, he may face a group emigration for his most precious talents, and that will lead his project to collapse, he will feel the pressure now more than ever, its interesting to follow and see how will he handle all that.
